long story short, we (dad and i) can't find where battery ground cable hooks to engine. battery sits in front of 1985 260h 350 block mercruiser engine. where was it attached originally? want to put it back that way.

The usual attachment point for the ground cable is at the flywheel cover (bell housing). One (or more) bolts are replaced with a stud. Make sure the metal is clean when installing the cable and then make sure the nut is tight. Using some medium grade thread locker or a nylon locknut can save aggrevation later on. So will some black touchup paint over the connection.

thanks. we went ahead and put a longer/bigger cable back to the starter. now we have no juice yet new battery and its hot. all connetions are tight but no juice to engine, spotlight, guages, etc. still diagnosing...

battery switch?

maybe left off a wire somewhere?

Best to use a test light as it will draw a little current and show a bad connection faster than just a voltmeter.

The gauges should come on with the key...the lights and other accessories are probably hot, thru their fuses/breakers, all the time. Everything needs two connections - a source of electrons and a return.
