1998 150hp 60^ V, OIS, starts up fine from cold, runs great, idles smooth, after a 20 minute run followed by a 15 minute sit, she don't want to start-
she will start after several trys, then runs fine, might not do again all day or might do it 1-2 more times. Checked for stuck float, compression good,
spark good under test conditions, Have not checked on water when acting up. ?? Ideas?? Thanks

I had the same problem, and here is the answer I got from Bill, Heat soak The carbs are overheating and boiling the gas off. If you pump the bulb up and use the choke you will have a better chance to start your motor.

"

Heat soak is when the heat of the motor rises under the hood after running for a while then shutting it off. The fuel boils from the carbs and that makes for hard starting and no power until the engine is run (if it stays running) for a while to cool down the venturis.

The 60 ° motors have this problem more than others because the carbs are at the sides of the motor where the block is hotter.

Ethanol fuel makes the problem worse. It's best if the owners start the motor and let it idle for several minutes to stabilize the under-hood temps. They may have to squeeze the primer bulb, too, at first.

Thanks for responding- that makes complete sense. The 60^ is a very tight configuration under the hood. We have been enjoying about 2-3 weeks of 95-100^ temps.
Responses like this one really make this forum shine- Thanks Again.

If it is indeed a heat soak problem, the solution is to allow the engine to idle for a few minutes before shutting it down. The idea is to cool the engine down a bit.
