I have a 72c 1.9:1 and 440.Bad cooler and the tranny overheated.Fixed cooler but after changing the oil I only had reverse.changed it two more times then I unhooked the cooler line. Have flow in reverse and neutral, trickles in forward. I have pressure gauge to install so i will know lbs but what could it be? Gotta Luv Boats!
 
how did you know the trans overheated? i have the same old V drives and every time i take them out i worry that there not going to last on the way in
 
well 3/4 of the oil ended up in the bilge and the spit test. I spit on it and it was hot. fry an egg hot.Not v drives straight, inboards.
 
Assuming you have proper trans oil level, check for debris in the trans oil strainer. Its located inside the oil return fitting.
If that's clean it's probably a stuck pressure regulator valve. You can remove the valve, clean it and polish it while the trans is in the boat.
