I have a 1996 alpha one. Last Year I was told that the lower unit locked up. Boat was idleing when this happened. I bought a manual. I have removed the outdrive. The throttle is in forward. I need to get it into neutral to see if the engine will still run to see if boat is worth fixing.
 
with the drive off, you should be able to pull the shifter back into neutral normally. If it doesn't move, your issue may be in the control box or the remote cables or the outdrive shift cable. Just remember to but the shifter back into FWD when you reinstall the drive.
