Alpha one impeller?

OK i have to tell you that i am totally new into boating.
But I went out only twice and twice had a break down.
After playing with my screw driver i managed to reach the shore but it wasn't fun at all.
So i've decided to take her for a big service. The mechanic told me they have replaced the impeller in the gearbox...
Can anybody tell me what is it?

Thanks

Get a manual or if you wait i bet someone will post a link to the manual for free that you can d/l.

Then you can read all about it and educate yourself.

The impeller is located in the water pump in our drive that pulls water up thru the drive to another engine mounted water circulating pump thru your motor to cool it and back out to the river, lake or ocean.

Get the manual and read it.

Do you have a generation 1 or 2 Alpha drive?

The gen 2 drives were made from 1991 to the present and are different from the gen 1 drives in various ways. To change the impeller on an Alpha stern drive, the upper unit (gear housing) needs to be separated from the lower unit. The impeller housing then sits on top of the lower unit.

Here’s instructions on how to change the impeller on an Alpha Gen 1

Though, as stated by the previous posters, you should probably find a manual on your engine/stern drive and boat.

Here’s a downloadable manual on a Alpha Gen 2 drive:

And of course there is the R, MR pre-alpha drives that have a different waterpump base than the Alpha-1 by just a hair. Casing looks the same on the outside. I found that out the hard way after buying the pump/base kit off the internet and had to buy the right one at my local parts dealer after all.
