Hard cold starting weirdness

Motors are twin 300hp carbed 350's model year 2003.

After sitting for a week starboard motor fires instantly and runs great.

Port motor cranks and cranks, sputters and coughs raw fuel out of the flame arrestor (yikes) and eventually starts and runs fine. Both run great all of the rest of the time but that first cold start is tough on the port side. Both run and start great hot.

Here's what is weird...

If I take the flame arrestor off the port motor, prior to the cold start, and look down in the carb then work the throttle, the accelerator pump is fine AND the motor starts instantly - every time!

The only thing I've thought of is that the choke is sticking open until I remove the flame arrestor and some how I'm knocking it "loose" in my "starting procedure".

Any better ideas??

Thanks,

Jeff

Definitely possible. You should be able to operate the choke via the linkage with the arrestor on, to see if something's binding.
