1950 martin "40" compression?

The motor runs and starts up with only 1 pill. I did noticed the top spark plug hole is almost stripped out all the way. maybe only 2 threads left. Could that be causing me to lose compression. Also how else is there to do a compression test. I plugged the compression tester in the plug hole and pulled the motor until the compression topped out and would not get any higher. ???? Am I doing it wrong? If I am please inform me so I will know. Thanks for the reply.

Sounded like you did the compression test correctly.

If the motor starts with only one pull and ran fine, what's the problem?

My Martin 75 (7.5HP) has 95 psi in one cylinder and 93 in the other. Runs like a top and pushes my 16 foot aluminum boat suprisingly well.
