rudders

not neccesarily a crusader question but...85 silverton which sat for a few years. hydraulic steering with 2 rudders. getting ready to launch this week and noticed the steering was really hard. disconected the cross bar to isolate the rudders and found the port side rudder very hard to move. starboard moved easily. any thoughts here? think the packing is just dried out and going in the water will free it up? thanks

Packing could be the issue. could also be growth or other crud on the shaft.

I find my hydraulic cylinder's pivot is usually the first thing to bind when the steering tightens up. if ignored, the seal will tell you and that can be messy.

I'd make sure the rudder swings free, individually and together, before launching...lot cheaper than having to repeat the haulout procedure.
