No serial number plate on a 20hp "blue band" motor

sometimes the serial number is on a silver welch plug on the motor itself.which on my 1984 20hp,is under the coils,on the LHS,on the block
 
Yes, might be on a welsh plug (silver, about the size of a quarter).

The Bluebands were built between 1974-77 if my memory is holding up, so you are probably looking for a serial somewhere in the 3755885 thru 4580036 range..
 
The --------" blue band " came out in 72 and was used till 75 --------then some variations--------- and again blue bands in the early 80's.--------------------------You might want to visit ----------nymarine -------website , it has all the pretty pictures of Mercury decals and the years that go along with them.
