hole in manifold

i have a 1996 454 mp thought i had a manifold gasket leak .pulled manifold
found no gasket . looked futher and found a hole in manefold this is fresh
water cooled . why no gasket? also why would there be a hole in the maniflod ? thanks for any info.
 
If you just purchased the engine, then I would say that the previous owner found the fault, and shoved it back together to get rid of it.

There should be Gaskets between the Manifold and the Cylinder Heads, and at the front and rear of the bottom of the Manifolds to the Block.

PS. Where in the Manifold is the hole? Is it a "Something it was dropped onto" sort of hole, or a "corrosion" sort of hole?

PPS. There are a lot of holes in a Manifold ;)

there is only one hole in it that should not be in it . it is in the third chamber . it is corrison burn thru .i have a new manifold to replace.

As you say it is in the third chamber, is that the Exhaust Crossover Chamber, or where?

There shouldn't be a problem with a fresh-water cooled engine, as there is no possibility of salt water rusting.

Any chance of posting a picture of the offending orifice?
