318 Rear Main Seal

Rear Main seal was seeping at the end of last season. Opened up the boat this Spring to find about a half quart of oil in the bilge. Sadly, the engine is a re-manufactured with less than 50 hours on it, out of the warranty period at this point.

My 318 is reverse rotation, and currently has a rope seal. Is there another sealing option besides the rope seal? If not, whats the best way to install the new rope seal. Thanks!

That sucks man.

There is another (better) option to the rope seal.......it's called a split-lip and is made of neoprene. Most Fel Pro gasket kits come with split-lip so it's kind of surprising that the re-man would use rope.

Unfortunately, you have to pull the crankshaft to install the new seal......so although the install itself is easy, there's a lot of work to get there and back.

I've got the gasket kit, and have the motor out. The gasket kit from Felpro has 3 rear main sets in it. Two of them are neoprene, and one is rope. One of the neoprenes is too big, the other has knurling on it, and appears to be for a forward rotation engine. If there is a neoprene gasket for reverse rotation, does anyone have a part number for it?
