older merc question 1978 70 hp 700

i just bought a 1978 mercury 700 70hp 3 cylinder outboard started and ran fine on the hose got it home and found the bottom two cylinders are burnt my question is is this old of a motor worth rebuliding? i really dont have the money to buy another motor but can rebuild this one for around 1200 does anybody know if this is a good motor or one with alot of problems any help would be appreciated thanks

Personally, I like the Merc triples---I have two of them--but most people HATE them.

No, it's not worth rebuilding for that much money. If you can find another power head that's any good, you might want to combine the two. if not, sell what's left on eBay. Lots of people looking for the ignition systems on those.
