1990 100hp GT-Main ground melting on start

I have a 1990 100 GT on a 1750 Wahoo. Noticed the main Ground cable from the battery to the motor began smoking and melting in the motor as it was being cranked. There was NO voltage showing on the ground side. I have since unhooked the battery. Any ideas as to what's going on? The motor has dragged some when first cranking after sitting a few days. Its done this since I bought it a cpl months ago. There's a new starter on it.

That type problem indicates either a loose ground cable, a tight but dirty cable connection, or a cable that is corroding internally.

Thanks Joe. It was a head scratcher for me for a little while. I inspected the portions of the cable where the insulation was melted and corrosion is the top suspect. Luckily (cost wise) the cable is only 6' long.
