Mercury fires when it wants to??

I've got a 75hp mariner 4 cyl that fires when it wants to. I've disconnected the rectifier still no fire. I'm thinking stator? Do you check the stator with it connected to the switchbox or not?

Running without the rectifier (and without the rectifier connected to a battery) is a quick way to toast your stator.

If you are going to continue (even with testing) to run without a rectifier you must ground the wires that feed it to the engine block.

The power the charge stator produces needs to go somewhere or it will fry the bobbins...

i have a 1980 650 mercury.i had spark then no spark,i had spark then no spark. i ended up spraying contact cleaner in the key switch, there is brass contacts in there.i have never had a problem since.my boat is also that old but it was a cheap fix that drove me nuts for a month,no one told me there were contacts in there that supply the spark plugs.but one old mechanic did know.
