I tried using 3/8" rod which works if you have the room but the back two mounts don't have enough clearance on my boat.
I figured there has to be a better way. Crusader part # 22165 is what's needed. Attaches to a 3/8" drive and has two pins which lock into the top of the mount so you can rotate it up/down. I got mine from Lighthouse Marine for around $50, well worth it.
