Evinrude serial number

I have a late 1980's model 15hp evinrude. The model number and serial number tag are missing on the side of the motor but the freeze plug on top of the block is intact. There is no model number on this tag... only the serial number - R8189225 -

Is there any way to identify the specifics of this motor in order to buy parts for it? Thanks in advance...
 
Check for another freeze plug (welsh plug) towards the back of the powerhead, maybe on the side of the motor.

Without the model number, which has the model year encoded, it's very tough to pin down an exact year.

Post a pic if you can - the models don't change much mechanically from year to year in most cases, so if you can even get close you should be fine...
 
The factory paint job on the engine's hood changes from year to year. Give us a good picture of the hood, side, front, back. We can probably give you the year with that info.
 
Well, the engine cover has been spray painted black so im not sure that will help. I will look for another freeze plug and let you know.
