485 Charging systems

I currently Have a 485 Mercruiser which has fried the stator and regulator, Im waiting on a Alternator replacement at the moment,

Just curious, I want to take It out this weekend, I also have fitted Electronic Ignition, I've done away with the points and condenser,

If the battery was to go flat while running the boat Would the boat stop? Or would It keep running Untill It was switched off? Or How long would a fully charged battery run the Ignition system before It goes flat, - Keeping In mind Id then have another battery or 2 aboard to restart and get home.

I have seen others do this knowing full well the battery would go dead.

Been waiting a month already to have the system sent out here, , $1200ausd here for a kit, Its ridiculous....

What is the numbers on the altinator I am sure we can find you a comp replacement for much less??IMO.
