Champion suggests a QL78YC (938) plug for this motor. The closest thing I can find from West Marine is L78YC (936). Other than the obvious "Q" what is the difference between these two plugs?

Re: Spark Plug Question

May be used, but you will at the same time 'black' out any TV and probably some radio communication in the vicinity.
Suggest you try another source.
'Q' - suppressor to reduce radio interference.

Re: Spark Plug Question

Not only for the sake of Tvs and radiocomms but the inductively suppressed Q plugs are recommended for use with all VRO and OMS systems.

QL78YC are fairly commonly used plugs in Johnson/Evinrude outboards. You really should not have any difficulty finding them.

Available from West Marine and in stock according to my searches. WM #331191

Re: Spark Plug Question

This from:
http://www.championsparkplugs.com/glossary.asp?manID=2&kw=Inductive resistor

Outboard marine Capacitive Discharge Ignition systems (CDI) such as used on some Johnson and Evinrude marine engines require a special inductive type Resistor','2','1')">resistor spark plug (such as a Champion Q-type). This is because these type of ignitions systems produces less voltage; use of non-inductive type plugs can cause misfires and poor performance.

Re: Spark Plug Question

for a full explanation of the need to use inductively suppressed (Q) plugs rather than resistively suppressed plugs see HERE
