1979 70hp wont go into gear after rebuilding water pump

I removed the lower unit to rebuild the water pump and have reinstalled it. But now I cant get it to go into forward or reverse. I didn't mark the shift rod before I removed :eek: but I thought I made sure it was in neutral when I installed lower unit. ANy ideas?

I think I got it. I opened up the motor cover and found the towershaft arm and interlock arm. I pulled up a little on the interlock arm that connects to the shift rod from below. I think that put the controls and the motor back "in sync" ie neutral to neutral cause when we fired it up it went into fwd and reverse just fine.

I post this just in case somebody else comes across this issue. Not just to toot my own horn. :)
