"Hello folks, trying to help out a friend. He's got a 6hp outboard and the pull rope gear/pulley or guide not sure what its called went bad. He sent me a picture and it looks like where the rope rests on a black spirle looking cylinder just below the gear that jumps up into the flywheel has chipped and broke and now the rope does not properly securing its self when not in use. I've tried looking for this part but not to sure of the proper name of it. I guess inside of this piece is were the spring is to recoil back into place. Any help?? Thank you."

I think you are refering to the starter pinion gear. On the VWB XXXXX models the OEM part #456674.
It's tough to find these. after checking with MarineEngine.com check with franzmarine.com and be sure to list your model and serial #'s
There are outboard salvage yards that might be able to help you. Alot of these guys are now a rope with a knot on the end starting system.
