Exhaust riser

Careful! (Here I go again...) A torque wrench is the most dangerous tool in a mechanic's tool box. Proper torquing requires clean and oiled (or not--you have to investigate) threads. If not, the bolts/ nuts will be too loose, fall off or break!

So what does one do? First, you want the threads to be clean and lubed with anti-seize--this is a marine application! Tighten the fastener until it 'feels' nice and tight, then simply add a 'flat' (a hex bolt has 6 of them) or two more. (Modern car engine head bolts are done similar to this.) With a little practice you'll be an expert. Oh, and when the motor is fully up to temperature, add a flat or two more. depending on how much 'give' the gasket makes as heat hits it.
