"You may want to check your ig

"You may want to check your ignition timing TA (total advance).
With an incorrect TA (spelled "Low"), you will not be able to reach the desired RPM under load!
(see your OEM specs for this.... may be approx 26*-28* @ 3k rpm.... again, see OEM specs)

You will be doing this in Real Time/Real Degrees, so the balancer will need to be marked off.

As for the first question...... do you mean a back flow prevention flapper?
There would have been NO flapper in the manifolds or Y pipe, if that is what you're asking!
Some have a bi-flapper inside of the exhaust bellows (too restrictive for a V-8, IMO).
Some had a flapper on the 280 lower unit exhaust outlet! (this was a factory option ONLY and was rare)
This was also the best option, IMO!

If the exhaust ran somewhat dry, and were to have over-heated, you may have blistered the interior of a manifold-to-riser rubber coupler, or you may have damaged the flapper in the bellows.
Either could/may cause exhaust restriction and may be preventing good performance!

also might want to change fuel

also might want to change fuel filters and clean the flame arrester atop the carb as well. Double check firing order.
