b88 Mercury 80 HP flywheel only turns 34 revolution

" Hope you can help. My '88 Merc 3 cylinder ran fine a week ago, went to start yesterday and would not turn over. Replaced battery, same problem. Removed hood and flywheel cover and manually turned flywheel about 3/4 turn until "locked up" again. The flywheel does rotate and cylinders have compression, it just locks up and cannot complete revolution. Any ideas? "

It is possible that something is lodged under the flywheel, causing the stator and flywheel to bind. If you are sure that there are no such obstructions, the problem is most likely that a worn connecting rod bearing or wrist pin bearing is allowing the piston to contact the crankshaft.

Jeremy makes a good point. It could very well be a lower unit problem. Pull the lower unit, and see if the flywheel frees up.
