"Is it possible to use a 1991 outer transom plate,gimble ring and bellhousing for a 1986 mercruiser sterndrive? I have a 1986 cabin cruiser with a mercruiser sterndrive. The outer transom plate and ring is shot. I have a complete 1991 transom plate,ring and housing assembly almost in new condition. From what i can tell they look exactly the same."

The Major difference is in the Shifting mechanism....
If it is Exactly the same as your's at the Shift Foot/ shift Shoe interface,...
Then you have an Alpha 1 replacement..
The Shift Shoe looks Very Different on the Gen.IIs..."
 
alot boats have the year befor

alot boats have the year before stuff on it example:

91' has 90' stuff on it cause they had it in stock.

Look close at the stuff see if it's the same. Should be.

Actually alpha 1 is better stuff than alpha 2 in my humble opinion.
