"Just bought an old Rude last

"Just bought an old Rude last week for $40 off of Craigslist. It is in fantastic cosmetic condition but does not run. Engine rotates fine, compression is 88 psi on each cylinder.
I have ordered a Seloc manual for it but have not received it.

Any tips or suspect areas I should look at which would cause a no spark symptom ?
This motor has points; can't it be converted economically to a more modern ignition system ?"

"Check clean reset points. &#4

"Check clean reset points. (Must be scrupulously clean) gap is 0.020" and is set when at the widest open.
Inspect condition of coils. Any visible breakdown of insulation = replace.
Condensers can really only be checked by substitution.
Also inspect HT leads

No kill button is there? Stop switch "built into" throttle control ?? Check!

Various plugs listed. Gap = 0.030"

RL82C, L86C, QL86C The "Q" plugs are not necessary on a points ignition though. Resistive suppression with "R" plugs is adequate.

Manuals other than OMC ones not usually recommended as they attempt cover too many models.

OMC manuals available from www.outboardbooks.com

Consider replacing the pump impeller esp if history not known.

Drain a renew gearcase oil. Seals will need replacing if any signs of water . Milkiness = water."

"I have used the selocs on sev

"I have used the selocs on several other motors [Yams and OMC] and I like 'em !

Will do the other standard maintenance items [impeller, gear oil, etc.] once I have it running. No sense in spending the $$ on an impeller is the motor isn't worth putting in service.

Given that this engine has been sitting in a barn or years, cleaning the points and electrical connections like grounds would be a good place to start."

"seeing ur above post...i'

"seeing ur above post...i'd lv it factory,ign wise..those newer eng's seem to have a better fit,on the ign plate...stator plate,brkr point plate,..etc.."
