"I would appreciate any help I can get. My husband has dementia, was sold a "1980" 6 hp johnson which when I saw it could see it was a '70. It cranks fine, but will not move the 12 ft alumicraft boat for more than 1 minute. I took out a loan to get this for him,he is so upset. Could anyone tell me please what I may be able to do "cheaply" to fix it. Thanks all so much!

"A '80 6hp would go for $3

"A '80 6hp would go for $300-350 around me. Hopefully you didn't pay much more than that.

Don't feel too bad, most folks buy motors that run great in a barrel and when they get to a lake its a different story.

Anyway, if you want to fix it. Start with a spark and compression test."

"Is the gas "fresh" or

"Is the gas "fresh" or does it have an unusual smell or color...if so, change it...it should require a 50 to 1 gas/oil mixture. Will the motor continue to run if the primer bulb is squeezed as it starts to lose power??? Is the vent on the gas cap open??? Are the o-rings in the fuel hose connectors in good condition??? Is the fuel filter(a mesh screen located under the motor cover) free of debris???"
