"After getting up on plain, the gearbox has just started slipping out of forward gear. The gear shifter does not appear to be moving to the neutral position. When this occurs, I throttle down and then the gearbox engages again. Does anyone have any thoughts. My experience with outboards is minimum."

check gear case oil for level and looks
might be not adjusted shift shaft height
 
Sounds like you need to check

Sounds like you need to check the transom height on the boat or the bottom of the boat.Something is causing the motor to cavitate. Also you should mark the prop hub and the prop to see if the prop itself is slipping.
