" I went to remove the lower unit on a 1989 evinrude
150 V6, to replace the water pump. The lower unit
seperated easy enough, but the tech manual had me remove the bolt at the top of the shift rod connector, I did that and the "barrel type clamp" that rotates the shift rod up and down at the base of the power head, would not fit through the hole in the housing to lower the whole thing down. That clamp does not appear to be removable, since it is pinned with a very small pin to rotate on and cannot be reached with human hands.
If someone has some advice or has done this before, I would greatly appreciate the help.

"Kevin.... There should be a 3/8" hex head bolt screwed into the side of that clamp, which is actually a long shoulder bolt type screw (a pivot pin). Sounds like you removed the bolt that faces forward, the one that clamps the shift lever to the shaft. The 3/8" shoulder bolt is reached by using a long 1/4" drive extension with a 3/8" flex socket. You'll also need the long flexible "finger" type grab tool to extract and insert that shoulder bolt.
