" I have rebuilt the lower unit of this motor replacing all worn parts and all seals except one. The o-ring which seals the shift rod is held in place by a what appears to be a brass retainer. How is this extracted? I have tried to gently drift it out from the top of the gear case but it it doesn't seem to have moved. I have always had Mercury outboards so this is new to me. Do you have any advice on how to remove and reinstall this retainer? Model #35DE12B, Serial #770811 "
