"Ayuh,.... There should be a 1/2" pipe plug in the intake manifold just aft of the T-Stat housing...
That's the Hot water to the tank....
There should also be a 1/2" pipe plug on the top/ side of the circulating waterpump for the return water...."

"The older models' service

"The older models' service manual says to tap the hot water at the t-stat housing (remove existing pipe plug on the aft side) and return back into the hose feeding the circulating pump with a 'T' fitting.

Also, in bold text, it states hoses to the heater should not exceed 5/8" ID."

Our "Green" friend is absolutely correct. I just checked the manual for your vintage. The only variation is that the manual give you a choice for the source location: the intake pipe plug or the pipe plug in the T-stat housing.

Based on the surrounding space, the intake location is much more flexible than the T-stat housing."
