"Hi Forum,

recently picked up a pretty filthy and neglected 15hp Mariner (1990, s/n 09610774). I've been disassembling it to find out whether it could be refurbished or whether I should just use it for spare parts.

Unfortunately, I found water in the gear oil. Since this is a recreational project and not a motor in use, I don't mind working on the lower unit as a learning experience. However, I'd need to know which parts I should try to replace.

Provided the prop shaft turns out to be straight, I presume I'm looking at at least the following, right?

- oil seal on water pump (#24 in upper pic)
- oil seal in prop shaft bearing carrier (#56 in lower pic)

Plus obviously new gaskets & O-rings where applicable. Am I missing anything? The motor has apparently been sitting in semi-salty water for a while, so I would hazard a guess that the leakage would be due to corrosion in parts touching the water. Or would a bad water pump base gasket (#19 in upper pic), or a leak in the silicone sealant used when reinstalling the leg be enough to let water into the lower unit?

Thanks in advance!
Tom

Any thoughts on which parts I should be shopping for to address a leaking lower unit? Would replacing the 2 rubber seals on the drive & propshafts be enough in most cases?

Most common is the 2 gaskets o

Most common is the 2 gaskets on the fill/vent. I would have to say if your not sure pressure test it in a tank. 5 psi with a hand vac/press pump and you will know for sure
