"This post is just an FYI. I purchased a 3.0L re-man from Mercury through a Merc dealer, who installed it in May 2008. After 20hrs, it would backfire through the carb. During inspection, the mechanic found the distributor got so hot, it had "welded" the rotor to the shaft and burned the mag pickup. OK, new distributor. 20 hours later - same thing. This time a claim was issued and paid for distributor and labor. 25 hours later - same thing. Merc had no answer and sent a NEW engine N/C, paid the labor for install and everything. A week later, a customer at the next marina had the same problem with his 3.0L reman and Merc sent him a new engine as well. Be aware of any 3.0 remans purchased from Merc over the last 2 years. By the way, still no explination from Merc, but I suspect a machining or cam bearing issue forcing the distributor shaft could have been a problem. Good luck."
