"Have older (80s-90s) Merc 25 HP outboard that has run great for years. Let someone else use it recently and has had problems since. Starts fine, but dies after short while. Seems to not be drawing fuel. Pump it up and starts and runs fine again. Will run continuously if pump ball every four or five seconds. Have looked at the things I feel comfortable with and can't find a problem. Any ideas? Thanks."

"Jim, sounds like the fuel pump diaphram is shot. You pumping the bulb is acting like a manual pump.

The fact that it died while loaned out is most probably a coincidence.

Find your serial number and stop in at a Merc dealer. A diaphram and gasket for the fuel pump (which is located on the left side of the carb if you are looking down the throat) should run about 20 bucks - an entire fuel pump rebuild kit goes for about 50."
