"I'm looking at another boat and it has a 91 Johnson 90hp. It runs, but one cylinder has low compression. I figure it would be a good project for me - always wanted to rebuild a motor. Anyway, it seems more simple in design than my current 98 Johnson 90 (60* motor w/ optical ignition). Are the 90* motors good? Reliable? Anything I should be aware of in advance?"

"Well, it's in Florida, as am I, so yeah, saltwater engine. Why avoid??

My plans are to tear it down, bore or hone cylinders (depending on scarring), new rings, pistons, bearings. Obviously a full gasket set and a new stator. I figure I'm looking at $1700 w/ me doing assembly and a shop doing hone/bore. Should be a new motor then (same thing as my current 90, but I paid someone else to do it b/c I was intimidated). I'm assuming heads, rods & crank are practically bulletproof right? (my mechanic at least said the 60* ones are)

I have a factory manual for mine and it's a HUGE help. Replaced my own stator, starter, reg/rec, fuel/vro pump and set timing. No way I'd consider a rebuild w/out a factory one. It's my increasing confidence w/ my current motor that is making me think I can do this. Plus I'm meticulous."
