Got reverse but no forward

"i replaced my water impeller

"i replaced my water impeller and gaskets. i put the drive in frorward, like i read on this forum page. everything slide to gether nicely. put boat back in water and now only got reverse. how do i get forward back. did not hacve the lower unit in forward. or did it shift in to reverse while i was putting it together? i have a 1987 165 mercruise with am alpha one out drive. its a 3.7 liter 470. please help"

"Something didn't get put together correctly. Soundls like the shifter 'parts' are not indexed correctly.

suggest getting a service manual, read it, reread it, then pull the unit and try re-installing it. Don't forget to top off the gear lube when you are done."
