"A buddy has a gen IV, 454 with a leak. Has anyone attempted to R & R the rear seal without disconnecting the piston rods? Do all the main bearing caps need to come off, etc?

"no - only the rear cap needs

"no - only the rear cap needs to come off. You'll need to fab an install tool out of shim stock.

If you want, I can send you the relevant three pages from the merc manual later tonight."
