Running out of gas

1973 evinrude 135hp I was told

1973 evinrude 135hp I was told to disconnect fuel line and run motor to drain gas out of carbs.Am i hurting my motor by doing this.I have been doing it that way for years.

"The top carburetor runs out of fuel due to gravity, and the engine continues to run on with the bottom carburetor for some time.

This results in having the two upper alumium pistons running up and down the steel cylinder sleeve with improper lubrication.... not a good idea.

You've been very lucky, doing that for years with no resulting powerhead problems. Whether or not to continue that practice though, will have to be your judgement call.
