"Hey all. Newbie in need of help! I have a 77 40hp Merc that will start and run for about three seconds and then die. Usually takes a couple of cranks, then will fire, run again for about 3 seconds, and die. Took plug wires off, disconnected fuel line at the filter(which was clean), and cranked. There was some gas flow, but not as much as I expected- More like a steady low flow is how I would explain it. The only way I can keep it running is on starting fluid and choked about half way, and its runs fine then. It ran for a few hours perfectly, and then it just died and this is how its been ever since. How much pressure should the fuel pump have at the filter? Can I just hook up a gauge to it and check for proper pressure? Any help would be greatly appreciated- Thanks!"

"About 4 pounds at high speed, and far less at idle. Sounds like your carb needs cleaning.

What's the service history of the motor? Sounds as if it's been neglected. Give it a thourough once over."
