"It seems pretty straight forward however, I can not loosen the nut on my 1988 5.7 mercruiser, alpha 1, gen 1 on the lower gear housing at the bearing carrier for the prop shaft. I did tap back the little tap and I have a tool that makes contact with the slots on the nut at 4 points.
Am I missing something?

thank you"

"If it was installed with the correct torque, 200ft.lbs, then you will need the correct tool to remove it. I use a 3 foot pipe on the handle of a 18" breaker bar on the correct wrench to loosen it."

look at the ring, there are several round circles the size of pencil erasers.

These are meant to be drilled in the event the nut will not loosen up.

Drill through ( only deep enough, not to deep and hit the carrier) at least three and then used a punch and hammer and drive the ring in towards the shaft and the sections should break off.

Once you get two or three pieces off the rest should come out easily.

Buy new nut!

Use perfect seal when reassembling.

If that is tough I hate to see what the carrier will be like............................"

am i going about it the wrong way?"

do you

It is the only way.

do you have the correct puller to get the prop shaft carrier out? If not then removing the nut is of no use.

The carrier must come out to replace the back to back prop shaft seals.
