Is there any problem using a freash water outboard in salt water for short periods while on vaction? The motor in question is a 85 Johnson 9.9.

Thanks Andy

I did not know there was a sal

I did not know there was a salt vs. fresh for small outboards.
We do it every year (2-3 times)for the last 3 with a 89 6 HP Evinrude in the worst sandy and salty conditions.
And we leave it on the beach semi-moored. High tide gets us once in a while.
Just take care of it upon coming home.

Mine has been used 99% in salt

Mine has been used 99% in saltwater since it was 2 years old thats 33 years with no cooling problems.
I flush it on the hose a good 10 minutes after each use. I give the garden hose a good squirt of dish detergent at the faucet before hooking up to the engine. This gives a good sudzing for about 30 sec to a minute at the begining of the flush.

"Thanks guys, I had heard there were differances in inboard and I/O motors for salt water, but wasn't sure if any of it applied to outboards.

"For the smaller ones, no. But the bigger ones from V4 and up, were often made in both alt and fresh water 'versions', like the 'ocean Pro' series that contain certain parts in SST and other solutions to reduce the salt water impact."
