83 Volvo 4 cyl Bayliner Backfired when trying to start

"Friend said his boat stoped running,has spark and getting fuel to carb.

When I turned it over it backfired very loud out of the exhaust.

Any ideas what this is?

PS Have not done a compression check on it yet.

"The timing belt may have jump

"The timing belt may have jumped one or more teeth. Run a compression test and see what readings you get.

Also, check the ignition timing and make sure every spark plug wire goes to the correct spark plug. "
 
Sticky valve? Broken valve spr

Sticky valve? Broken valve spring? Hole in the piston? Looks like you will have to pull the head to find out.
