"runs fine on flat water. pulling kids on tube in moderately rough water intermittantly would shift out of gear. usually when under strain. I'm thinking clutch problem. lower unit seals seem good, no water in the oil.Any ideas on a fix and approx. cost to have it done?"

"Could be the clutch, but woul

"Could be the clutch, but would check the shift linkage first - Force rigging "pulls" the cable to get a forward shift. If the cable has stretched it may simply need adjusting or replacing.

Take the hood off, and with the motor not running have someone put it forward with the shifter - you will see the linkage move. Then try to force it a little more forward by hand at the engine end of things - if you can, service the cable (adjust or replace).

If that seems fine, then the problem could be in the gearcase itself (clutch or bad shift cam).

A shift cam is relatively cheap at about 25 bucks, but quite a bit of labour to get at it. Ditto the clutch (although not cheap at 175 bucks for the part) plus labour and other parts required (seals, maybe shims, o-rings etc).

If the problem is in the lower unit you could be looking at 300-500 bucks (or more) for a shop to do it..."
