"anyone buy one of these marine starters off ebay. i got mine and it looks pretty cheesy. it says new premium starter on box, armature housing is smaller than stock starters. doesnt look like it would stand up to a big block."

"I am not familiar with the term Caltric. But if you are speaking of the PMGR or HTGR starter motors, then I'd say that these normally kick butt over the conventional early OEM starters.
They are High Torque Gear Reduction or Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction units.
These are the way to go now days!!!!!!

The PowerMaster square block HTGR 2.7 watt units work well on the BB. PowerMaster lists one, but it is not marine rated. You could check and see if they have a Marine unit.
Otherwise, stay with a PMGR/HTGR unit for marine

The thing that you want is an all steel reduction gear head. Some use a plastic planetary ring gear. Avoid these.... especially for the BB!
