    Default "shifter goes into forward or

    "shifter goes into forward or reverse from start-up,no problem. does not go into neutral unless you turn off key. this happens on the water only. when hooked to hose in driveway,lower unit down,engine running,operates normally goes out of forward or reverse no problem. any ideas?"

    "Like the chief says, high idle speed makes shifting tough. It's hard on your gears as well.
    It sounds like your ESA (Electronic Shift Assist) is not working. There are many posts here on the subject. Read through the one below for testing procedure. Let us know what you find.

    "600 rpm in water ,did major tune up last season, carb rebuild, new points, plugs & wires, condensor, dwell & timing, boat runs great and the only issue is getting to neutral, again this only happens on the water,it does not happen on the trailer"

    Like Chuck says sounds like the ESA is not working which could be caused by several things from switches to the module to a sticky lower shift cable.

    "Definitely sounds like an ESA issue. Miss-adjusted, bad connection, or maybe a bad module. You need to test it like Bob Hill directs in the discussion I linked to above. Run it on the hose in the driveway. At idle, lift the interrupt switch and the engine should cut out. This takes the torque off the prop when in the water and aids shifting out of gear."

    Default "esa switch was stuck in the o

    "esa switch was stuck in the on position,not cutting out engine for that split second, removed switch from mount, arm was in about 8 oclock position ,re-positioned the arm to about the 9 oclock position,reconnected ,switch tested while running and it slightly interrupted engine, remounted, but also do not overtighten the mounting screws, can resrtict operation of switch. now it shifts in and out of gear easily .touchy little switch to be sure. thanks for your help,guys"
