the plate on the motor has 640

the plate on the motor has 640-07B-tecumseh 7759044 and on the back it has 1 30 76. So I assume it is a 1976.I had the carb rebuilt but now I have no spark. It would start and die before. What is the first thing I should check?

"If it is solid state, your out of luck. There were 2 kinds -one was just a coil. Nothing else, the other was a coil with a trigger. Neither were repairable. Should yours go back to magneto, it (like the rest) is under the flywheel and has a set of points and condensor which can be replaced with the correct lawn mower ignition. lauson #30547 and 30548 also in a bubble pack from Arnold #tu-106"

"If you have solid state, you're not out of luck, but it won't be super cheap. CDI Electronics makes the parts that go under the flywheel, though last time I checked they wanted ~$150 or so to do the retrofit. You have to send them the magneto plate and they replace everything and send it back to you. It's the first item on this page:

If the coil is bad, the coil itself is no longer made. However, you can retrofit a Johnson/Evinrude coil as shown on the following site. The coil is Sierra 18-5176, widely available online. I am in the process of doing this myself.
