"Hey guys, I recently solved a riddle that's been haunting me for awhile. I'd posted a problem trying to time my 4.3 l Mercruiser that did not have a timing tab on it. No one seemed able to assist. The timing is spec'd at 10 degrees btdc, but the single mark on the balancer is tdc.
In talking to a former GM mechanic he advised me to set my timing light to 10 degrees of advance, and then to time to the single mark on the balancer and the "v" on the timing chain cover.
I had purchased a timing light that had this feature, but the instructions didn't indicate that it would work for this purpose. Well, it does. Problem solved.
Timing lights with built in tacks and advance/retard features do cost more money, but they are worth it."
