Exhaust flapper

ok last year on my last trip o

ok last year on my last trip out i started to hear a clacking noise from the back of my inboard 120hp motor i think it is a 4.3L merc. I have not had a chance to get to it since I went to winterize it. When i was running the motor with just the hose i could not hear the sound. But i remember distinctly the sound it was making on the lake. From what i have read here it could be the exhaust flapper...could it be anything else? Also it is ok to run without changing the exhaust flapper?

But you'll be risking Runability issues or catastrophic motor Failure..."
 
On a scale of 1 to 10 how easy

On a scale of 1 to 10 how easy of a job is this?

I have worked on cars almost my whole life and have done a bit of work on my boat engine. Not looking to rip out my engine again since i don't have the room in the garage any more.
P.S. I do have a manual for the boat but haven't popped it out as of yet since i am studying for an exam until thursday
