"So, I found myself in the ocean last w/e with a suddenly missing spark in the port engine. I've got the OLD Prestolite system with electronic pickup feeding a newish Jacobs ignition system. Anyway, i've got a new ignitor coming in, but I've never been inside these distributors before. I do see an alarming amount of dusting/corrosion in the pickup area and on the very small fasteners.
I've heard issues with springs and weights on these distributors, and the GM HEI, and the DUI distributors seem to be favored, with their full electronic advance modules. I guess I'm asking if I should stay with the Prestolite systems, or cut my losses and move to something a bit more modern? Any experiences out there?"

Dave:

I only got to three (maybe four) years before i removed mine...they seemed to really have an appetite for those advance springs. I went with merc's thunderbolt IV system as they were readily available at that time (nearly obsolete now). Only regret I had was not doing it earlier.
