"Hi,
from my uncle I got a Mercury 9.9 two stroke engine from the nineties. It starts really well and runs smoothely but when you accelerate, the engine "dies" and the revs go down. Pulling the choke helps and it accelerates to top speed, but obviously the engine runs to fat and if you slow down, you have to take the choke out quickly or it shuts down.
I have tried another carb from a friend who owns a 15 hp engine, but it didn`t work either.
What can be the problem?

"it is starving for fuel,,,,causes,,,,dirty carb, bad fuel pump, bad gasket, bad tank, bad fuel line, tank vent, low compression. Put the old carb back on after you clean it. Pump the fuel bulb to see if it helps, let us know"

thanks for your quick reply an

thanks for your quick reply and list of possible causes.
how can I see or test if the fuel pump is broken?

"if pumping the fuel bulb help

"if pumping the fuel bulb helps its a fuel supply problem, its usually a clogged main jet in the carb from sitting with old gas in it"
