"Can I substitute automobile oil filters for the Volvo Penta filters for my old MD2B? If so, how would I be able to tell which filters are comparable?

"Actually, based on my decades of boating, there is not an auto filter or a marine version when it comes to the filter insides. If you search on the internet, there's a gent that has posted his independent findings. (if interested and you can't find it - email and I'll dig up the link)

As far as finding the correct filter, most all makers have application lookup on their web sites. Pick your preferred brand and find their web catalog/application guide. Wixfilters.com, for example, shows a 51335 for your engine.
